Get the Facts About Dogfighting

pit bull

What is going on with dogfighting and how can we put a stop to it?

Dogfighting is a contest between two dogs that are placed in a fighting arena made with plywood walls or a dug out pit. The dogs are bred for fighting. The majority of the dogs are the American Pit Bull. The spectators' are being entertained and gambling for the winner. There is big money involved which often involves drugs and violence. This is an extremely cruel and sadistic activity.

The injuries the dogs get from this are usually servere and fatal. Because the Pit Bull has such powerful jaws the inflicted wounds cause deep punctures and even broken bones. Dogs often die from bleeding to death, shock, dehydration, exhaustion or infection and suffer for hours and sometimes days before dying. These dogs have no kind of a life just suffering and death.

The training proccess quite often involves other animals which are sacrificed in a very cruel way, if you can imagine, it will make you sick. Smaller dogs, or weaker dogs, cats, rabbits are used. Often stolen pets or "free to good home animals" found in the news paper. It's so sad to think that your beloved family pet could be stolen and used in such a horrifying and cruel way or any animal for that matter.

These fightingdogs often have been bred for generations to be dangerously aggressive to other animals and are a danger to the community, especially dangerous for small children and your pets. Dogfighting is illegal in all 50 states and is a felony in almost every state.

If you want to help stop this horrific practise write letters to the media, law enforcement officals, prosecuters and judges and to your state legislator. If you suspect that dogfighting is going on somewhere call the local law enforcement agency and also urge them to contact the HSUS (The Humane Society of the United States) for assistance.
